Excessive hair growth in women is scientifically referred to as Hirsutism. It is an undesirable symptom. Hirsuitism however, should not be confused with virilization. Hirsutism is part of Virilization. Virilization refers to when women take on masculine characteristics such as deepening of the voice, enlargement of the clitoris and receding hairline. This occurs when there are high male-hormones.
If you have excess hair this does not mean that you have a high amount of male hormones in your system.
Hair growth is caused via puberty, menopause and hysterectomy.
Puberty or adolescence incites body changes one of which is hair follicle activity. On the other hand, menopause and a hysterectomy can cause a decrease in hormonal levels thereby promoting new hair growth on both the face and the body.
Hair growth is also caused by Glandular changes. Taking certain medications such as birth control pills and danazol, male hormones and even pregnancy can cause changes to our endocrine system. This in turn can lead to the production of unwanted hair.
